Visiting the Gard region

By car

Around the Villa des Claux, you’ll discover a diverse region with many exciting destinations to explore: spectacular sceneries, mountains, natural caves, ancient Roman sites, historic cities, museums – all of these places are at less than one hour away from the Villa des Claux!

Just to the North, you will find the Gorges de l’Ardèche, the Orgnac and the Cocalière caves, and the reconstitution of the Chauvet prehistoric cave.

To the West are the Cévennes: deep valleys, Mont Lozère, and the Cévennes Natural Park. These wild mountain landscapes unveil their charms along their small French winding roads.

Around the city of Alès, remains of the coal mining era can still be found. You’ll be able to get a feel of a miner’s family life in the 1900 with the museum, the mine reconstitution and the petrified forest.
For art lovers Alès museums offer modern and contemporary art collections in Pierre André Benoit museum and archaeological collections and fine arts at the museum Colombier

Anduze will charm you with its famous potteries : these garden vases are since the eighteenth century the flagships of all southern gardens, parks and orange groves in Europe . From there, the Cévennes scenic railway can take you to Saint-Jean-du-Gard, at the steady pace of its steam locomotive. The bamboo grove of Prafrance will transport you half-way around the world, with its Asian vegetation and Laotian houses on piles. A stone’s throw from there, the Trabuc cave and the Mialet Desert Museum will give you an insight of the Cévennes history.

The typical landscapes of Southern France are close-by: Nîmes with its ancient Roman vestiges are less than an hour away. From there it is very easy to go on to Aigues-Mortes, the threshold of Camargue, famous for its flamingoes, horses and herds of bulls.

To the East of the Villa des Claux, the roads that lead to Uzès, the Pont du Gard, and Avignon, are beautifully bordered by garrigues and vineyards. Following the Cèze valley offers breathtaking viewpoints, including the gold washing sites of Saint-Ambroix and the waterfalls of the Sautadet. The village of Lussan, the Concluses and the Mont Bouquet are also day trips of choice.
